The First Step in Fighting Barbarity is to Speak Out

So, some very well intentioned people had a march in Barcelona the day after the attack on the Ramblas,  it’s a city I know well from when I worked there as an English teacher. They wanted to let every one, especially the Jihadis, know they weren’t afraid. Well, congratulations, but it’s easy not to be afraid when there isn’t a van full of religious nutters trying to mow you down. If they had been walking there the day before, when the attack was occurring, they’d have been utterly terrified like any normal human would have been. If they had survived they’d be dealing with horrific injuries and traumatic mental scars. I’ve seen the disturbing images of dead people including children strewn along the Ramblas that the media will not allow us to see. I can’t even imagine the distress that will linger in the memories of the survivors.

Yet, turn on the TV and the media are regurgitating the same old platitudes after each of these ever more frequent massacres of European citizens who come from many ethnic backgrounds. ‘Don’t be angry.’… ‘Love will Conquer Hate’…’We wont let this divide us.’ Well, here’s  a breaking news story  CNN, BBC and SKY News. The vast majority of Europeans are not racists. We are not about to turn on each other because of some Islamo-fascist terrorist. We have embraced, welcomed and integrated people from all over the world and continue to do so. The majority of immigrants have become loyal and productive citizens of our liberal democracies. However, there is a large number of people in one community, not all, but enough that there are severe problems, who have divided themselves from the rest of us by harbouring racist and both violent and non-violent extremist views.

In Britain alone, according to intelligence services, there are 23,000 people with known Jihadist sympathies. That is 23,000 people who believe the people on the Ramblas had it coming to them and the kids at that concert in Manchester got what they deserved. The government only have the resources to monitor 3,000 of these individuals and so some slip through the net, as we saw in London and Manchester and as we no doubtedly will see again. Yet, the media and certain sections of the left don’t want us to talk about this. They want us to share cat photos instead on Facebook and attend narcissistic vigils where we congratulate ourselves for not being afraid of terrorists who aren’t there at that precise time and place and because we are focusing on not hating those who kill our children. Just as well we didn’t have such a supine mindset when the third reich marched it’s way over our continent. Do you think they were handing out cat photos during the blitz when London, Coventry and Belfast were pulverised by Nazi air raids?

Meanwhile, in the last week, one white supremacist knuckle dragger murdered an innocent political rival in the United States and the media and many commentators encourage us to get very angry indeed. What’s more, they want us to be alarmed that a tiny amount of American & European neo-Nazis & white nationalists, that the majority of people despise and who carry out horrific, but significantly less attacks than far right Islamists, are somehow comparable to the threat we faced from the third reich or that from militant Islam. To paraphrase the British commentator, Brendan O’Neill , some people only care about fascist movements when they are led by odious white racists like Richard Spencer, but when they are led by brown skinned racists and bigots we are encouraged to focus on the root causes of Islamist violence, which invariably means it’s our fault somehow and to not give in to hate and anger. Isn’t treating one set of fascists to a different set of standards based on their skin colour and religious beliefs both racist and discriminatory?

Well, I oppose the far right in whatever form they take, be it that of extreme ethnic nationalism or Islamo-fascism. This is not a time for love or virtue signalling hastags on twitter. Innocent people are being murdered on our streets by religious maniacs. It is a time for righteous anger and to defend liberal democracy from all of its enemies, but also to face the fact that in Europe the biggest threat to our societies is from Islamo-fascism.

You can stick your head in the sand and deny it if you want. You can self censor and no platform your own opinions as I used to do for fear of being called a racist. If you fear being called a racist it’s a sign you are not. Racists tend to not care about being called racists. They openly march in the streets as we saw in Charlottesville last weekend or form political parties like the irrelevant BNP in Britain. Alternatively, you can speak out by not capitulating to the politically correct mantras that says you shouldn’t be angry about Islamo-fascism. You can take a stand with brave women like ex-Muslim, Ayaan Hirsi Ali  and the liberal Muslim Sara Khan and say militant Islam must be stamped out. As the late  Christopher Hitchens said, you can surrender if you want to, but dont do it in my name. The first step in fighting back is not to remain silent in the face of barbarity.

  1. More of my work here for anyone who is interested. http://ardevine.blogspot.ie/?m=1

  2. All well and good, but we could have similar images of Israeli and American , Australian and British, Jews in Palestine; Americans, Australians, Brits in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and others; Hindus in India and Sri Lanka; Buddhists in Burma…. let’s apply the principle equally.

The fact is, lots of people are happy to speak out against violence committed by Muslims, but ignore the violence committed by other religions. Hypocrisy betrays the very foundation of a civilized world.

    • This article is about regular people speaking out about Islamo-fascism despite the likely label of ‘Islamophobe’. Not quite sure that speaking out about those other forms of barbarism carries with it quite the same risk of public opprobrium.

    • LibertyWorks It certainly does in regard to Jews active in Palestine and in the US it certainly does in regard to American wars currently ongoing. It would also create hysteria in India if Hindu violence was addressed internationally. Even worse if Hindu violent misogyny got the same focus as Islamic.

    • No.hindu Jew Buddhists are killing people in the west.just Muslims who.want to rule the world.

    • Tom Garvey Oh sorry, I did not realise that Western lives mattered more than those of other human beings My mistake. Silly me thought all human lives mattered.

Muslims don’t want to rule the world, the US wants to rule the world. Even if Muslims did want to rule the world they couldn’t. They are disparate cultures and countries, not unified, largely Third World and with not a hope in hell of ever coming close to challenging Western military power and with no hope in hell of converting Westerners, particularly women.

So, it is a nonexistent threat. A better question is, who benefits from fear of Islam and Muslims and why is it that more than once, so-called Islamic terrorists have been found to have secret service links to Western nations?

For example, the Manchester bomber had been recruited by MI5, at the age of 17, along with his father, to commit terrorist acts in his home country of Libya!

Perhaps if Western countries, following cravenly in American footsteps, were not so busy destroying countries where Muslims are common and slaughtering Muslims, there would be fewer radicals.

    • Roslyn Ross Silly me…now I understand,it’s all the fault of every other religion, speaking out about Islam…should be ashamed of ourselves, inciting them to the violence preached in the Koran,by their leader,a murdering paedophile, who demanded that all of his followers use him as an example… IDIOT!!!!

    • Alan Brazil By all means talk about incitement to violence in Islam but talk about it in all religions, particularly Christianity and Judaism where you will find intolerance and violence abound in the Old Testament.

I am not sure why Mohammed was a murdering paedophile anymore than many of those who litter religious writings for all religions thousands of years in the past. Context is all.

Perhaps post the part of the Koran which reveals him as a paedophile. Everyone murdered in those days so that is hardly exceptional. And everyone indulged in child marriage but that isn’t paedophilia.

  5. Well written. The cartoon alone sums up the mainstream media’s, and most politicians, fear of truth.

  6. The first step in fighting barbarity is working out what’s causing it, not mouthing off. “Regular people speaking out about Islamo-Fascism” isn’t going to get to the core of any problem, but it will sure as hell stir up unnecessary angst. It can’t be spelt out any more simply or any more repetitively to you people that the vast majority of everyday Muslims are not only as equally appalled by “barbarity” as we are, but they are by far and away the bigger victims of it. They keep telling you – and have to keep on telling you – that they are not the ones causing the problem. They are not all sitting there thumbing through the Quran and plotting your demise, because if they were, 1.6 billion of them would be running the planet well before now, 1500 years after Mohammed got famous. Banging on about our supposed right to badmouth whoever we like, and then not bothering to listen to the replies (how many right wingers have made the silly claim that Muslims aren’t saying anything or doing anything or demonstrating against extremist violence – google it, guys, you’d be surprised how many efforts are made which go completely unnoticed by westerners), isn’t a solution. “Regular people speaking out about Islamo-Fascism” – if the average pleb doesn’t bother to know the difference between the actual aggressors and the normal muslims, doesn’t bother to research and question and then shut up and listen, then those they target are more than justified in asking “why do I have to listen to you – wtf would you know?”…

    • “The first step in fighting barbarity is working out what’s causing it, not mouthing off.”

Speaking up against barbarity isn’t ‘mouthing off’. It’s saying that we’re no longer going to tolerate it.

” “Regular people speaking out about Islamo-Fascism” isn’t going to get to the core of any problem, but it will sure as hell stir up unnecessary angst.”

No, more angst will be stirred up if people are made to be pariahs for holding a non-politically correct opinion. It is the suppression that brews bad feeling.

“It can’t be spelt out any more simply or any more repetitively to you people that the vast majority of everyday Muslims are not only as equally appalled by “barbarity” as we are, but they are by far and away the bigger victims of it.”

Who are the ‘you people’ to which you refer?
This argument is a strawman that conflates criticism of Islamofascist barbarism with criticism of everyday Muslims and this article does not blame Muslims in general.

“They keep telling you – and have to keep on telling you – that they are not the ones causing the problem. They are not all sitting there thumbing through the Quran and plotting your demise, because if they were, 1.6 billion of them would be running the planet well before now, 1500 years after Mohammed got famous.”

Once again, this article has not said that.

“Banging on about our supposed right to badmouth whoever we like, and then not bothering to listen to the replies (how many right wingers have made the silly claim that Muslims aren’t saying anything or doing anything or demonstrating against extremist violence – google it, guys, you’d be surprised how many efforts are made which go completely unnoticed by westerners), isn’t a solution.”

Looks like you’ve got some problems with the idea of freedom speech.

“If the average pleb doesn’t bother to know the difference between the actual aggressors and the normal muslims, doesn’t bother to research and question and then shut up and listen, then those they target are more than justified in asking “why do I have to listen to you – wtf would you know?””

This is why speaking up is important. It allows for dialogue and for education. When you try and shut people up, you end up with the opposite effect than you intended.

  7. The causes, by the way, are deeply rooted in history – the rival factions of Islam, and the interactions between the Arabic World and the West. If you want to read up, start with the Zionist movement into the M.East in the late 19th century, and then work forwards and backwards from there. What’s also worth remembering, and you need to be philosophical, is that all opinions ever held by people have degrees of extremism – the person who sits on one side against an issue and calls for calm rationalism can share space with others on that same side wanting violent reactionism – and equivalent people do exactly the same thing on the other side of the issue.

  8. Bit late to worry about that
